Nodes of the Moon ~ Guides to Contentment
© 2004 Ocean Moonstone

Because I’m an Aries, I’ll start my first Astrology article in a very out-of-order and odd place to begin: The Nodes of the Moon.

Astrologers often neglect the Nodes of the Moon. A chart is packed with so much in-depth information in the form of a chart wheel, that unless the chart is for divination, Nodes can be over-looked and forgotten. So much can be gleaned from a chart by planetary placements in houses and signs alone, that the Nodes can find themselves the very last aspect to gain the attention of the astrologer. However, the Nodes can be a very useful tool in discerning ‘callings’ to areas of study, or styles of living. Therefore, I find them indispensable in guiding those who inquire about their natal chart to a direction of contentment. I think of the Nodes as “callings to happiness”.

Unhappy with your current circumstances? Read on…

First, you’ll need to have a copy of your natal chart wheel to find out where your Nodes are placed. The quickest and easiest way to do this is to get a free copy from an online chart service. I prefer Astrology.com, click here to go to their chart shop and get a free copy of your chart wheel. There are many online sources for a free natal chart. A simple search should offer multiple online sites that offer this service. You’ll need your exact birth time and  birth place to get an accurate chart. It’s worth the effort to dig out your birth certificate and get your exact time of birth. Do it now! Okay, got your birth time and chart wheel in front of you? Good. Now print your chart wheel – everyone should have a copy of his or her natal chart!

At first, your chart will appear like a mass of lines and unfamiliar symbols. You’ll adjust! For now, just focus on the Nodes. The Northern Node will have a symbol that looks like this. node symbol  Now, which house is it sitting in?

Each chart is divided into twelve sections termed Houses. Find the House in which your Northern Node is sitting. Found it? Good. Now let’s focus on the Northern Node, sometimes abbreviated by astrologers on your chart this way: N.N. (Clever, aren’t we?!), and the house it occupies.

The Northern Node is roughly what I’d term a fate marker, or a guide. These are my terms and reflect my experiences and therefore encompass my opinion as an amateur astrologer only. Now that I’ve qualified my statements, let’s get busy! The Northern Node in my experience is guiding the person to their calling, or to the area of life that, were it to be more heavily focused upon by the person, would bring them more joy and contentment.

For instance, say your Northern Node is sitting in the 12th House of your chart. This means that you as a person will find the most personal satisfaction focusing time and energy pursuing 12th House issues. You may be fated, as the Northern Node suggests, to find contentment pursuing these interests associated with the 12th House. (see below)

Well, we’ve come to the part where you must brush up on what the 12th House is responsible for to find which area of life needs your focus to be more content! Briefly, here is what each house is associated with:

  • 1st House: Ego - pursuits of the self and outward appearances, such as beauty or the persona (think actors)
  • 2nd House: Money, status, "stuff" that is owned like clothing, i.e. material wealth; what you value
  • 3rd House: Siblings, communication in all forms, short journeys
  • 4th House: Home, the mother (or whichever parent you are closest to), situations surrounding the end of life, ancestry
  • 5th House: Play, gaming, competing, children, creativity, romance
  • 6th House: Work, health
  • 7th House: Marriage and close relationships with others
  • 8th House: Sex, power, the occult, other people's money, death
  • 9th House: Religion, college, philosophy, long journeys, (foreign travel)
  • 10th House: Career, high status, fame, reputation, the father or other parent
  • 11th House: Friends, groups and social endeavors (think rotary club or political caucuses), goals
  • 12th House: Seclusion, institutions (hospitals and prsions, for example), deep inner spiritual seeking, secrets, karma, giving of the self

So we are back to our 12th House Northern Node. Looking at the list, you will see that the 12th House rules prisons, hospitals, and large institutions where confinement may occur. It rules spiritual seeking, like a vision quest may entail, and all forms of seclusion. It’s also the house of secrets. Anything hidden will naturally fall here.

Looking then at a person with a 12th House Northern Node, I’d think firstly they’d benefit from more time alone. Frequent and regular periods of solitude and quiet (seclusion) will bring this person into inner balance and happiness. Meditation may be extremely useful.

Secondly, this person will benefit from pursuing interests of‘charity. Donating time or money to an animal shelter (an institution of confinement), or donating time to a hospital will bring this person a feeling of deep satisfaction (and the good karma this House calls you to work on). In fact, any endeavor that allows this person to give of himself or perform an act of charity is a pursuit that will tremendously benefit him according to his 12th House Node marker.

Thirdly, I’d know by this placement that this person feels a draw to search deep within to find his spiritual truths. This person isn’t necessarily religious – he is looking for the spiritual. And there is a difference. This person needs to pursue inner knowledge via reading, searching the net, finding any answer to the spiritual they feel is hidden, as this House calls them to. And consequently they will find a sense of peace pursuing these endeavors.

As another example in case the 12th House was too confusing,  what if you have a 5th House Northern Node? Well, this is the house of fun! Play! Can anyone say online gaming? Yes! If you have a 5th House Northern Node, you need to play more, baby! You need to get in touch with your inner child and spend more time letting down your hair. You need some serious rollercoaster time. Besides this - dude, you need more romance. Pick up a Harlequin romance novel or rent When Harry Met Sally. Just spice up your romantic life and you’ll reap the rewards!

Additionally, a 5th House Northern Node needs the many lessons children can provide. I think my children teach me as much as I teach them every day. So, too, can a 5th House Northern Node benefit from the experiences gained from spending time with children. This person may need to write children’s books, since this house also governs creativity. Maybe this person feels a call to create a line of children’s clothing or wants to patent a new and inventive toddler bike. (Which would encompass play, creativity, and children, which this house associates itself with). The combinations are endless. But spend time meditating on the 5th House if your Node is there, and you’ll probably find that your deepest desire of happiness is probably focusing on that house and it’s issues.

Now that we’re getting a handle on this Northern Node thing and how it can point us in the direction of more personal happiness, lets look at the Southern Node marked by this symbol. node symbol

The Southern Node is always directly across from the Northern Node (See, didn’t know that did ya? And you thought this might be a waste of time!). This node points toward the ‘easy way out'. It’s what looks good and right, but isn’t the true path to your personal happiness. In all truth, if you are unhappy right now with yourself, chances are you are probably pursuing your Southern Node issues instead of your Northern Node issues.

Wanna test it? Okay. Find the House the Southern Node is in. Let’s say it’s in the 2nd House. The 2nd House governs the material, wealth, status, the stuff you amass (like a sports car limited edition, a Rolex watch. It’s your bank account.) If your Southern Node is sitting in the 2nd House you’ll be tempted to find your personal happiness by amassing cold hard cash, a Visa gold card, and by competing with the Jones's. You’ll be tempted to seek status in all forms. Don’t! Not with your Southern Node sitting in that house. If you have a 2nd House Southern Node, you actually have an 8th House Northern Node and would be happier and more satisfied focusing your energy there.

The 8th House rules death, power, sex, and the occult. A person with this placement of a Northern Node will find the most happiness by finding their personal power. Maybe you’ve had negative self-esteem and need to find your value and your inner Goddess or God. Maybe you give too much of your power to your spouse and need to stand more on your own two feet and make more of your own decisions. A Northern Node here is urging you to find your strength and use it.

It’s also asking you not to misuse it. A Northern Node in this House is asking you not to be a tyrant. Don’t be so in touch with your personal power that you use it to strip others of theirs. An 8th House Northern Node is telling you that you may find pursuits of the occult very satisfying, such as spending free time (or hey, even a career) focusing on Astrology, Tarot, Runes, reading about life after death subject matter, psychic phenomenon, etc.

This House also governs ‘other people’s money’. Oddly, a Northern Node here may mean you’d be happy and quite good at investment banking and advising others on this topic. Soul search on this placement and the House qualities, and you probably will see that you already have interests in this area and just need to focus more on them in your free time. Since this house governs sex – well, have more of it. That’s all I’ll say about that!

The Southern Node is the path to avoid. It looks easier to you, but it’s not the path that will truly fulfill you and leave you feeling content. It’s the easy way out, the more appealing route.

Here's a real life example: I have an 11th House Northern Node and a 5th House Southern Node. This means I’m tempted, heavily, to spend my free time playing Nintendo, hanging out with my kids at Six Flags, and playing in any way that strikes my fancy. And um, I do! I’d be more personally rewarded if I spent my free time contributing to social groups. I have a burning desire to join political rallies. (Though I just haven’t.) Why? My 11th House Northern Node is beckoning me to be more outwardly social, possibly more political, and to focus more active energy on my goals instead of my play. Yeah that’s me! I have several goals and avoid pursuing them. My 11th House Node is calling!

The Nodes, too, are fate markers, but that’s an entirely different subject. If you have charted before this life, for instance, to have a car wreck on July 15th of this year, your Nodes most likely will be ‘highly aspected’ and in major play in your chart wheel of that specific day, showing that this for you was an event of fate. I think Nodes reflect what your soul has charted ahead of time to learn from these events.

The Nodes of the Moon are your own charted reminder to yourself of which avenues will bring you the most personal contentment versus which way will tempt you and cause more wasted time.

And here you thought life came without instructions...
